Artist Statement – Hélène Lindqvist, 2026
My work is concerned with presence: how an image or a figure can hold attention without a major narrative or action, simply through tension, energy, and timing. This kind of suspended intensity particularly interests me.
Many years in music theatre have shaped my understanding of images. I do not experience them as static objects, but as embodied moments that occupy space and slowly unfold.
For this exhibition, I explored the question of identification. The figures depicted are not merely motifs, but invitations surfaces for projection in which one can recognize oneself or become lost. Ornaments, too, appear not only as decorative elements but as possible conventions: beautiful, protective, and at the same time constraining.
My paintings function like dramas in extreme slow motion. They capture a single, charged moment taken from a larger, open narrative. Strong colors, powerful figures, and recurring patterns carry this atmosphere.
Alongside the paintings, small sculptural figures emerge as carriers of wishes and thoughts.
